The History of PleasantonBefore Pleasanton was established in the 1850s, the area was home to a settlement known as Alisal, which was located on the Rancho Santa Rita, an 8,894-acre Mexican land grant. One of the first homes to be built in the area was recorded in 1844 and still stands in the Alviso Adobe Community Park. An interesting aspect of the region’s history is that it was located along La Vereda Del Monte (The Mountain Trail), where many bandits and outlaws would seek refuge before the California Gold Rush began. Some of these bandits were known for ambushing gold prospectors and then hiding in Alisal. Some of the most famous California bandits were known to haunt the area. Eventually the outlaws dispersed and Alisal became home to miners looking for gold and merchants there to sell the miners everything they needed. The first Caucasian settler in the area is recorded as Augustine Bernal in 1850. John W. Kottinger arrived in 1851 and is said to have named Pleasanton after the distinguished Civil War general, Alfred Pleasonton. An error by a recording or postal clerk resulted in the current spelling. From this point on, the town began to grow and when the transcontinental railroad arrived in 1869, the population was about 500 people.
Various industries began to take root in the area. Rangers and horse breeders were attracted by the availability of water and good climate. Dairy farms were established and vineyards were planted. The hops grown in Pleasanton was widely sought after and became internationally famous. By 1900, six years after Pleasanton was incorporated, the community was thriving. There was a busy Main Street and numerous successful businesses, including three hotels. By the 1930s, the gravel and sand industry had begun and continued to be a profitable enterprise for decades.
Modern Day PleasantonPleasanton rapidly grew in the 1960s and ‘70s. During this time, the amount of agriculture in the area decreased and land was used for additional homes, schools, and businesses. In 1982, Pleasanton made a significant changed that has led it to being one of the wealthiest cities in America. It began construction on the 850-acrea Hacienda Business Park.
